Advent Day #6

Tea #6

“Green Tea with Mandarin”

I have always loved green tea, but I must admit, I did not realize how to steep it properly, so I have learned a lot recently through my research! Perhaps the reason I first started drinking it is because it has been known for centuries to have medicinal value and health benefits, and I look to give my body nourishment that is natural and offers advantages other than simply a nice taste. China, the world’s largest tea producer, is best known for its green tea, although most of what we drink in the Western world is not likely from China, as they export very little green tea. Interestingly, if you research where Fortnum & Mason sources their green tea, China is listed, along with Japan, and other countries. I honestly wish they told you exactly where the green tea is from because there is a lot of interesting information about the regions of the world where green tea is produced and how they are different.

I was struck by the light color and flavor of this tea as well as the look of the tea bag itself. I even took a picture! Call me crazy, but green tea leaves are pleasing to the eye. The nose on this tea is lovely and very citrusy. That does not completely translate in the flavor, and I was a bit disappointed to find out that “mandarin and clementine flavouring” were ingredients. I would have hoped the mandarin pieces and orange oil would be enough. At any rate, if you steep this tea for 3 minutes (the max time they recommend), and let it sit for a few, it is really very smooth and an overall nice green tea. My one complaint is the citrus flavor is not as natural as I would prefer, likely owing to the flavouring that was used. I think I would like to try some of their other green teas, particularly those without any manmade ingredients. 6/10
